Energy consumption is a major factor in industrial production, driving up costs and contributing to the climate crisis. A new robotic technology developed in Saarland is set to revolutionize the industry by reducing energy usage by 90% compared to conventional systems. Using lightweight shape memory alloys (SMAs), researchers have designed non-pneumatic industrial grippers that operate without additional sensors, offering a more efficient and flexible alternative to traditional robotic arms.
Developed by a research team led by Professors Stefan Seelecke and Paul Motzki at Saarland University and the Saarbrücken Center for Mechatronics and Automation Technology (ZeMA), this innovative technology will be showcased at this year’s Hannover Messe.
Rethinking Industrial Robotics
Robot arms are essential in modern industrial production, performing tasks such as assembling printed circuit boards, positioning workpieces, and loading materials. However, these systems consume enormous amounts of electricity, with many relying on pneumatic grippers that require a constant supply of compressed air. This not only adds to noise pollution but also limits miniaturization and adaptability. Additionally, traditional robots are difficult to reprogram and often pose safety risks for human workers.
The new SMA-based gripper technology addresses these challenges by offering:

The Science Behind Shape Memory Alloy Grippers
The Saarbrücken gripper system relies on bundles of ultrafine nickel-titanium wires, which function both as artificial muscles and sensors. These wires leverage a unique property of nickel-titanium alloy—the ability to switch between two different crystal lattice structures.
When an electric current passes through the wire, it heats up and contracts, generating force.
Once the current is turned off, the wire cools and returns to its original length.
This shape memory effect enables precise, controlled movements that mimic biological muscles.
Professor Paul Motzki highlights the efficiency of these artificial muscles: “Nickel-titanium SMA has the highest energy density of any known actuator. A wire only 0.5 millimeters thick can generate a pulling force of 100 newtons—roughly equivalent to lifting a 10 kg weight.”

To maximize performance, the research team has developed bundles of thinner wires, increasing surface area for faster cooling rates and higher-frequency movements. In fact, their technology holds a world record—a bundle of 20 wires, each just 0.025 mm in diameter, can generate 5 newtons of force at 200 hertz (200 cycles per second).
Future Applications and Industry Impact
At Hannover Messe, the team will showcase prototypes of vacuum and jaw grippers, demonstrating how these shape memory alloy-driven systems can securely hold and manipulate workpieces without requiring continuous energy input.
By replacing conventional pneumatic and electric actuators, this breakthrough technology could lead to lower production costs, improved energy efficiency, and a reduced environmental footprint.
"Using our years of research, we can tailor these wire bundles for specific industrial applications, adjusting their thickness and number to meet precise operational needs," explains Motzki.
With increasing demand for sustainable industrial solutions, shape memory alloy-based robotics could become a key driver of next-generation automation, paving the way for smarter, greener manufacturing.
